Access databases are used in businesses mainly for payroll, stock
control, sales and accounting purposes. When an Access database
is supporting a corrupt file or unrecognizable database format error,
information can no longer be accessed.
Corrupt
Access Database symptoms
- Unrecognized database format
- Enter database password (when none was set)
- The Microsoft Jet Database Engine cannot open the file
- Corrupted mdw file affects user permissions - password not working
There are steps that can be taken to obtain Access database recovery.
Sometimes data recovery can be easily restored by using the built
in 'repair and compact' utility however loss of data is sometimes
a sign of a bigger problem such as physical damage that might be
made worse after using the utility. A data recovery specialist is
recommended when you are unsure about the extent of the damage.
Access database recovery can be achieved quickly and painlessly
if you have a well thought out plan for disaster.
BACK
UP!
Backing up can save important data from being permanently lost!
Before attempting any repair operations data should be backed
up. Attempting to open the database can complicate things further
resulting in important data loss.
Steps for Backing up
Rename the backup file appropriately. For example if the file name
was 'Customers.mdb' this file should become 'Customers_CorruptBackup.mdb'.
The file can be backed up by either copying the file to another
folder or backed up onto a tape drive, zip disk or writable CD-ROM.
Problems Backing Up
Problems backing up can occur due to incorrect configuration or
faulty media. At this point any new data since the last time you
backed up will be lost. This is why backing up should be done regularly.
A company might want to backup daily in preparation for potential
data loss occurrences.
Access Database Recovery Options
Call
a data recovery specialist
- Run the built in 'repair and compact' utility
If you have chosen to run the utility the following steps should
be followed.
Running Utilities
Go to the tools menu and point to Database Utilities.
Click onto Compact and repair Database.
Create a clean database
Every time corruption occurs it is imperative to rebuild a new Access
database. Access databases can retain corruption even after running
the 'compact and Repair' utility.
When Microsoft
Access starts up it gives you the option to create a new database.
Specify a name and location for the database and then click
create. Import all tables from the corrupt file or backup
file into the database.
Disclaimer: If there is physical damage, the utilities will not
be the solution. Running a utility may in fact overwrite important
data that could otherwise be recovered.
